In the will of Simon Essex who died in 1518 and lies buried in the north aisle he bequeaths twenty shillings to the reparation of Bocton (Boughton) church “for my lay stole and to the mending of the steeple”. He also leaves forty shillings for new glass to the window at the high altar, and finally thirteen shillings and fourpnce to purchase “a stone to lay over me”
